Cook Lakes, hidden deep within the Wind River Mountains, in the opposite direction as the literal "beaten path" to Titcomb Basin, is is still nearly as quiet and undisturbed as it would have been centuries ago. We met a hiker out there on the trail who stopped short when he saw us and said, "You're the first people I've seen in three days." He'd just come in the back way, over the mountains from the north. Most of his journey had been off trail. He'd walked across a plateau called Alpine Lakes Basin on the map, surely more remote and serene than Cook lakes. There are endless lakes like this in the Wind Rivers, difficult to get to, but worth every step of the journey.
