Well over a century after American soldiers battled the Apaches at Fort Bowie, I helped install juniper stairs into the dirt trails of that national monument as part of the Saguaro National Park Trail Crew.
We found the debris from those battles all around us. Several of my finds are now on display in the museum there, like the ornament I'm holding in this picture, which would have adorned the top of a hat. No, they did not wear helmets back then. They wore hats in battles where bullets and arrowheads crossed paths.
