Joshua Tree National Park

I'd been traveling the American West for more than a decade, with the national parks as my focus, before I ever walked through Joshua Tree National Park. It's located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California, hundreds of miles from just about anywhere. The heat and sun keep a lot of people out of this region of the country.

But the spring day I was there, fog occasionally swept in right up to the hills, bringing with it a fine mist. The park was nearly empty, making the desolate desert seem even quieter and more other-worldly than usual.
