Approaching Machu Picchu from the jungle below, instead of from Cuzco--which is how most tourists get there--presented us with a unique set of challenges.
For one, after a series of caravan shuttles, we missed the last train, so we had to walk along the tracks. Luckily, that was only a five-mile journey, a few hours of hiking. We had just enough daylight to make it there before sundown.
So we didn't hike the famous Inca Trail, but we did walk along train tracks for two hours. Doesn't that count for something?
