A Yellowstone Summer
That summer in Yellowstone changed everything about my life. I started hiking and backpacking and sleeping outside at night, even when I had to work until after dark. I roamed great distances, up and over mountain passes, across wide rivers, through mile after mile of dense forest, and I came face to face with some of the fiercest predators in North America: black bear, grizzly bear, wolf, wolverine, mountain lion.
Toward the end of the summer I saw the trail crew for the first time. They were out there using chainsaws to cut through logs that had fallen across the trail. With that I immediately acquired a new life goal - to work on a trail crew - and discovered a fifteen-year career and the focus of my life.
